Guest speaker: Timothy Leary
PROGRAM NOTES:
[NOTE: All quotations are by Timothy Leary.]
“I like the Pope. I think he’s the finest mind of the 12th century.”
“It really is an awesome epidemic of deliberate stupidity that is laid upon us by the media, by the press, by the magazines and so forth. They simply do not raise any of the issues that will challenge our interest or intelligence.”
“There’s simply no question that anyone who knows anything about how to use brain-activating drugs and is operating with a clear mind, with no desire to screw other people’s minds up, whose willing to put in time and patience, and sensitivity, can help anyone wash their brain. There’s no longer any excuse for having a mind that you don’t like, or having a brain program that you’re dissatisfied with.”
“I’ve always hated the Second Law of Thermodynamics.”
“It always comes down to individual choices of what chemicals you’re going to use to stimulate your evolution.”
“You use a drug intelligently when you know what effect it’s going to have on you, and you use it at the time and the place that it’s going to add to your growth, or your fun, or your overall program of life management and directorship. And you’re not going to use a drug that in any way will fuck up, or slow down, or throw obstacles in your overall path.”
“Computers are to the Eighties what acid was to the Sixties.”
“One thing that drugs give you: Personal options to change your own mind, a way of rewarding yourself, of teaching yourself, of activating yourself, of changing yourself. And one thing that the power-holders do not want you to do as an individual is to change your own mind and learn how to reward yourself.”

This is really the best Timothy Leary talk I’ve ever heard! I’m even showing it to my square friends
Charlie Parker passed away in the mid 1950s. I don’t think he visited Millbrook, right?
I finally got round to checking this one out, and it turns out this is is one of my favorite lectures from Tim which I’ve had in the stacks for many years.
The label on the tape I have says it’s actually the Billy Peterson Quartet during the interludes, not Charlie Parker, and it sounds more akin to a live event with the quartet playing during the breaks than what Lorenzo describes. The time frame would seem to be around 1987 or ’88, given Tim’s reference to the upcoming election.
I loved his “Stupid people use drugs stupidly – intelligent people use drugs intelligently.”
Pura vida to the Psychedelic Salon!
wow! That was mind-blowing, Lozo! Way, Way, too Much! Timothy Leary is beyond that audience! They really seem to miss all his jokes…It’s amazing that the Space Program and the Space colonies movement seems to have completely collapsed…
Leary’s interest in it at that time was written about in his StarSeed Series and Exo-Psychology books. Starseed, neurologic, & Terra II were written in prison and were blueprints and mythological ideas about why we need to go to the Centre of the Galaxy to meet our “Creators” ! At the time the Directed Panspermia theory was in the news and it is thought by that crowd that we Life/DNA/GAIA needed more than 4+ billion years to create our selves?
Teilhard de Chardin also thought that the function of US is to biologicize the entire Universe of Matter into living Consciousness a la Omega Seed…we ‘re Way behind schedule!?!
