Guest speaker: Terence McKenna
PROGRAM NOTES:
Date this lecture was recorded: April 1993
[NOTE: All quotations are by Terence McKenna
“I think it’s important to talk about and analyze your experience. There is no communication, even within the confines of your own mind, if you can’t describe what’s going on.”
“The crisis we’re in, as a planetary society, is a culture of consciousness. There ain’t enough of it. That’s what happens when women are raped in Bosnia. That’s a failure of consciousness. That’s what happens when rivers are polluted with DDT. It’s a failure of consciousness.”
“The idea that art should save humanity is very out of fashion in the cynical ’90s.”
“When Fascism comes to America it will be called traditionalism. That seems to be how it’s going to present itself.”
“Dancing your ass off in a noisy environment is a perfect strategy for clearing your system of a drug.”
“Your SELF is the instrument for the exploration of these dimensions.”
“Ideology is fairly absent in shamanism at a practical level. It’s basically about experience, not about an ideological preconception.”
“What if there is actually something that survives bodily death, that actually continues to exist in a dimension which we would have to call mental, or trans-real. And what-if you could come and go from that dimension using shamanic techniques? That is what in fact shamanism has always claimed to anyone who would listen.”
“What is language? It’s a strategy for escaping from the narrowness of the present moment.”
“I think that, well, frankly, I don’t know what I think. It depends on how recently I smoked DMT.”

Goodbye Reality with Mark Pesce – 02.22.18
McKenna was wrong. Orwell was right. Fascism came to America, not in form of traditionalism, but anti-traditionalism and post-modernism. How could he not see this? I know he had a Marxist phase in his youth, I guess that blinded him somewhat to the dangerous elements of the left.
“The fascists of the future will call themselves anti-fascists” – Winston Churchill
Thanks Lorenzo and family!
It’s so wonderful to have Terence be with us still in so many ways. If you pay careful attention, there does seem to be a cheeky, crafty, mystical and mysteriously Terence-like energy out there in hyperspace, blasting across infinity and smiling the light of a thousand suns. Bless his soul : )
I also caught Mark Pesce’s talk at EGA, and was amused when he addressed the crowd as being ‘everyone in this room’ when we were in fact, in the great and beautiful outdoors, albeit at night time by that point. If I were to summarise his talk it would be: the cutting edge of paranoia.
I had left FB long ago and was slightly offended to be included in a group of addicts who could not prise themselves away from social media. Many of us have, and with great results. Just saying. He seems like a great guy otherwise, and shout-outs to the EGA crew for putting on the best outdoor conference event yet. I enjoyed it immensely and it was also great to see Kat Harrison in Australia for the first time, fresh from visiting Tasmania : )
peace
Having just listened to Eric’s podcast with Mark, although it was really good I found that it was missing some of elements of the lecture that I saw in December at EGA. Another take on this is a 15-20 minute presentation that Mark gave last year, with interesting Q&A that go into some greater depth about the points raised:
Civic Hall Presents: “The Last Days of Reality” Brown Bag with Mark Pesce” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cj_IubkeXoc
Note that the video cuts out intermittently around 24 minutes and there is some discontinuity but the audio is OK
I would encourage anyone to attending the Monday night conference to watch this as well, as it will extend the conversation somewhat.
A highly paraphrased quote from Mark that I recall (not in the video) – “Facebook does not see its users as customers – they are its resources.”
I had the privilege of hearing (and, like everyone else in the audience, participating in) a lecture from Mark on this topic fairly recently. It was at once amusing, terrifying, fascinating, and – like many others who speak on such topics – extremely thought provoking,
I’m really hoping that I can connect to the Monday Night Conference March 5th session, depending on time zone differences.
[COMMENT by Lorenzo: I hope that you can make it on Monday. One of our “regulars” is also from Australia, and as I recall, it will be Tuesday afternoon for you, which may be difficult if you are at work. Depending on how many people show up I hope to keep doing these on the first Monday of every month. Hopefully one of them will work for you.]
